So yesterday I picked up a copy of GRID 2, and after playing it for several hours and progressing through season one of campaign mode, I feel that I can safely summarize this game’s hits and misses.

+ Realistic graphics, realistic damage, decent car selection, a decent challenge, many forms of racing (touge!), simple controls, realistic engine noises, realistic tire smoke.

- No cockpit view, controls are a bit twitchy, limited options, surprisingly tight tracks, DRM.

Summary: buy this game new, not just because DRM, but also because DLC. In my opinion, it’s the bridge between Forza and Project CARS. It’s well worth the money, especially with the unlocks you get as you progress.

It may seem picky but my biggest complaint with GRID was the lack of qualifying in the races in the different series. I'm sorry, but arbitrarily starting at the back of the pack while your biggest competition gets a front row start for a 2 lap race gets a bit tiresome. To really advance you have to drive like Maldonado to overcome the baked-in disadvantage.

Exhaust shaking = crazy accurate. Shaker hood scoop not shaking = fsjkfhkdshgasjk _

Also, the first thought I had when I looked and saw the car hit 150:

“Someone put in a 4.11 without adjusting the speedo”

How would you put the handling realism?

That’s pretty good. I did like GRID but PCARS is monopolizing my Sim time.

I’m pretty sure the windscreen wipers shake too. That does not happen. Maybe I’m thinking of a different game though...

Have you played GRID 1? How do you feel in comparison?

I found this game to be a big let down. GRID had some pretty good simulation physics, that you could turn down with assists if you wanted an easier game. I think that’s a great way to make a sim accessible. GRID 2 has dumb drifty physics with baked-in assists that are sort of fun, but far from the polish of the first game. And it makes the drifting mode turn to complete shit because you can’t even do proper powerslides, you’re relying on the handbrake far more than you should have to.

I also found the graphics in GRID 2 to be lackluster and blurry, but that might be because GRID looked better back in 2007.

I did come to terms with it, about halfway through the game I started to like it for what it was rather than wish it was something else. All in all it’s a pretty good game. But I think the first was better. In fact, I don’t think there’s a single area in which GRID 2 is better. I adored the first game.

Haven’t played Autosport yet.

I think GRID 2 is much further from a sim than the first game. I’d rate the handling realism about a 5-6.
